UK Visa Processing Time from India: Three Weeks, and What Stops the Clock

Three weeks. That is the Home Office's own figure for a Standard Visitor decision, and unlike most processing-time claims circulating in Indian travel groups, it comes with a clear definition of when the counting starts.

The official wording#

GOV.UK: "Once you've applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you'll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks."

Read the conditions, because they are the whole story. The three weeks begin only after all three steps are complete: the online application submitted, identity proved (biometrics at the visa application centre), and documents provided. An application sitting half-finished in your account is not in the queue.

One relief that surprises applicants: "You'll get your passport or travel document back on the same day." The UK does not hold Indian passports for the duration — the centre may keep supporting documents, and it tells you which at the appointment.

What pushes an Indian application past three weeks#

• The appointment, not the decision. As with Schengen, the visible wait for most Indian applicants is the slot at the visa application centre, which is worst in the pre-summer and pre-Christmas peaks. That time sits before the clock starts.
• Verification checks. Employment letters, bank statements and sponsor documents that need confirmation add time; this is the most common cause of an application drifting past the usual window.
• Previous refusals. A file with a prior refusal — UK or elsewhere — attracts closer scrutiny, and the refusal history has to be declared. What to do about it is in UK visa refusal reasons and reapplying.

Paying for speed#

GOV.UK offers a faster route rather than promising one: "You can check to see if you can get your visa decision faster." In practice that is the priority service (a working-week target) and super-priority (next working day), both charged on top of the £135 Standard Visitor fee, both subject to availability at your centre, and neither guaranteeing an approval — only an earlier answer.

Whether the extra cost is worth it depends entirely on how firm your travel dates are. If the trip is months out, the ordinary route is fine; if a conference or a family event is fixed, the priority fee is cheap next to a rebooked flight.

Plan against the sum#

An honest timeline for an Indian applicant looks like this: days-to-weeks for an appointment, then three weeks for the decision, plus a buffer for verification. Apply early — the Standard Visitor route accepts applications up to three months before travel.
