Japan has one of the shorter decision windows among the visas Indians apply for, and one of the more misunderstood ones — because the number people quote covers only the part that happens inside the embassy.
What the mission says#
The Embassy of Japan in India directs applicants to submit through VFS, notes that no prior appointment is needed, and adds an instruction worth taking literally: "All the applicants are required to plan the trip well in advance. Applications can be accepted from 3 months prior to the travel date."
For a clean short-stay tourist file, the adjudication itself is generally a matter of about five working days at the mission. What sits around it: the day you hand the file to VFS, the transit of documents, and the return leg. That is the difference between "five days" and the fortnight applicants often report.
The eVisa changes the shape, not the speed#
Japan's eVisa has been available in India since 1 April 2024. Its real benefit is not a faster decision but a shorter physical chain: no passport surrendered, no sticker, no courier legs. For an applicant in a city without a convenient centre, that can remove more calendar time than the adjudication takes.
The route you use also depends on category and city. Diplomatic and official visas, and cases needing humanitarian attention, are handled directly by the Embassy rather than through the agency.
Two things that quietly add a week#
- Incomplete supporting documents. Japan's requirement set is specific about the itinerary and the funding evidence, and a resubmission costs the full cycle again. Our Japan visa for Indians guide has the document list.
- Peak season volume. Cherry blossom (late March–April) and autumn foliage (November) concentrate Indian applications into narrow windows. The five-day standard holds up best outside them.
The cost side is unusually kind#
Worth knowing while you plan the timeline: since 1 July 2026 the visa fee for Indian nationals is ₹500 for a single or multiple-entry visa, against ₹8,650 and ₹17,350 for other nationalities applying in India. Transit visas were abolished. The VFS service fee is charged separately. That figure, and why it differs so sharply, is in Japan raised visa fees, but Indians pay ₹500.
If a refusal comes, Japan does not explain it — the mechanics of that, and what to do next, are in Japan visa rejected with no reason.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a Japan tourist visa take from India?
- A straightforward short-stay application is generally decided within about five working days at the mission, but the Embassy of Japan in India also asks applicants to plan well in advance and accepts applications up to three months before the travel date. Add the VFS submission and return legs to the five days.
- Does the Japan eVisa decide faster than the paper route?
- The eVisa system has been available in India since 1 April 2024 and removes the physical passport handover, which takes the courier legs out of the timeline. The adjudication itself is not promised to be faster; what changes is the handling around it.
- Can I apply for a Japan visa three months before travel?
- Yes. The Embassy states that applications can be accepted from three months prior to the travel date, and asks that all applicants plan the trip well in advance. For peak seasons — cherry blossom and autumn foliage — that early window is the whole advantage.
