Which states the Delhi embassy covers#
New Delhi is structurally different from India's four consulates. Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata each publish an itemised list of the states in their district. The Embassy's own page states only that it "coordinates the activities of four consulates — in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad" (in.usembassy.gov, checked 1 August 2026). No comparable sentence names what New Delhi itself covers. By elimination, that is every state and union territory the other four do not list — the consular district north India inherits by default.

OFC and embassy in Delhi: two addresses, two appointments#
The interview happens at the Chanakyapuri embassy compound — Shantipath, New Delhi 110021, phone 91-11-24198000 (in.usembassy.gov, checked 1 August 2026); the chancery opened there in 1959, designed by Edward D. Stone. The biometrics appointment Delhi applicants book runs at a separate VAC, operated by VFS Global. Applicants use "VAC Delhi" and "OFC Delhi" interchangeably for the same site, distinct from the Embassy itself. The general OFC/VAC split mechanic is covered in full on ustraveldocs explained. The address most recently published is G-4, Ground Floor, Ring Road Service Lane, New Delhi 110024 (timesofvisa.com, reviewed 31 July 2026). It is not obviously the same building a January 2025 applicant described reaching "through Shivaji Stadium Metro station," down two floors past metro security, "right opposite the escalators" (one applicant, r/usvisascheduling, 19 January 2025). This project could not confirm whether the VAC moved between the two dates or the accounts describe one site from different angles; verify the current address on usvisascheduling.com before you travel.
New Delhi carries one structural quirk the other posts do not. A March 2024 embassy notice states that "B1/B2 interview waiver appointments have been consolidated in New Delhi." Applicants were still quoting it as late as March 2025: it left that route "extremely limited" at the other four VACs, while "appointments continue to be readily available in New Delhi" (quoted via r/usvisascheduling, 30 March 2025). Applicants can still submit interview-waiver documents at any of the five VACs at no cost. There is no drop-off centre Delhi applicants can use directly inside city limits. Chandigarh and Jalandhar, the two centres linked to this post, both sit outside it, and each charges ₹1,200 per application — a contractor fee, separate from the $185 MRV fee every applicant already pays the US government. Full eligibility rules, after three rounds of narrowing through 2025, are on interview-waiver eligibility.
Appointment day at Chanakyapuri: arrival time, what you may carry#
Two documented New Delhi cases, roughly a year apart, describe the same building from different angles.
The older case has a wider vantage point. One applicant, auto-assigned a New Delhi consular interview after booking OFC at the Mumbai VAC, reached the Embassy "right at" the printed appointment time. What came next: two security checks, then a waiting hall where "batches were created on a first-come, first-serve basis rather than based on the appointment time." The applicant watched someone whose slot was two hours later get seated first, simply for arriving earlier (one applicant, r/india, 10 February 2024). Batches ran 20 to 30 people. Interviews ran across roughly 22 counters, 2 to 8 minutes each, with denials visible in the same hall.
The more recent case sets a fixed buffer and a full timeline. One applicant with a 9 January 2025, 3:15 p.m. VAC appointment and a 14 January 2025, 12:00 p.m. Embassy interview arrived 30 minutes early for both. Both venues bar phones, watches, car keys and other electronics; only documents in a transparent folder or a small cloth bag get through, and paid lockers exist at the VAC but not, as far as this applicant found, at the Embassy. The VAC visit — document check, a barcode sticker on the passport, biometrics and photograph — ran "in and out under 15 minutes." The Embassy interview followed the same two-security-check, waiting-hall structure above, and ended in approval: "Approved" in the CEAC tracker that night, "Issued" the next morning, delivered by courier three days later against a ₹850 delivery fee paid on receipt (one applicant, r/usvisascheduling, 19 January 2025).
Neither account is a published rule; both are dated, first-hand descriptions of one visit each, not a guarantee of what any other applicant will experience.
