Austria Schengen Visa Processing Time from India: The 15-Day Rule Plus a 7-Day Catch

Most Schengen missions simply let the EU Visa Code's 15/45-day rule stand unremarked. Austria's Embassy in New Delhi restates it in almost identical language on its own India page — and then adds a step the generic rule never mentions.

What the Embassy states directly#

"As a rule, the processing time of an admissible Schengen visa application should not exceed 15 calendar days." If the file needs further checking, "the processing time may increase to 45 calendar days." So far, this matches the EU baseline exactly — no faster, no slower than any other Schengen state on paper.

The addition is a mandatory prior consultation that applies to certain nationalities: a security-clearance step the Embassy discloses only in outline — "this consultation process can take up to seven calendar days" — without naming which nationalities trigger it or what criteria decide that. It sits on top of the 15/45-day window, not inside it, so a file caught by it can run past 45 days without that being an error or a refusal signal.

There is also a dated, plainly worded caveat on the same page: "We apologize that the processing times for visa applications may be taking longer than usual." No specific delay range or date is attached to that line, but its presence on the Embassy's own site is itself worth knowing before you plan a trip against the 15-day figure alone.

The filing window is a hard cutoff, not a guideline#

Applications must generally be lodged "no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before departure." That 15-day floor is not advisory — a file submitted with less runway than that is rejected outright rather than fast-tracked. The Embassy's own advice: "we would request that you submit your application as early as you can," noting the six-month window is open the moment you have firm travel dates.

On appointment timing specifically, the Embassy adds that "appointment waiting times may be somewhat longer during the peak season," recommending applicants file as early as possible without naming which months count as peak — plan around the Indian summer travel season regardless.

Who actually decides your file#

Austria has outsourced the paperwork end of the process: "The Austrian Embassy New Delhi has outsourced the visa application and the return of the passports to the external service provider VFS," while the decision itself stays fully in-house — "all applications will continue to be assessed by the Austrian Embassy only." VFS collects documents and biometrics and returns the passport; it has no say in the outcome or the timeline once your file leaves its counter.

The Embassy's consular section keeps limited hours — Monday to Thursday, 08:00-12:00, plus scheduled appointments — which matters if you need to follow up on a file directly rather than through VFS.
