Most Schengen cover letters for a family visit just need the host named and their documents referenced. Spain is different: the invitation itself has to come from the police first.

## BLS International, not VFS

Spain outsources Indian visa intake to BLS International, operating its own portal at india.blsspainvisa.com — the one mission in this cluster that doesn't route through VFS Global at all. Applications go to the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai depending on the applicant's home state, with BLS handling document collection and biometrics on the mission's behalf, the same intermediary role VFS plays for Italy, Germany and France. Travel insurance meeting the €30,000 minimum is flagged by BLS as a hard requirement checked at the counter, not left to the visa officer to catch later.

## The requirement that actually differs: the Carta de Invitación

If the trip is a stay with family or friends rather than a hotel booking, Spain asks for a document most applicants have never heard of: a **Carta de Invitación**, and it is not something the Indian applicant writes or the host simply signs. Spain's own National Police portal describes it as a formal police document — the host in Spain (a Spanish citizen, an EU citizen or beneficiary of EU free-movement rules, or a foreigner legally resident in Spain) applies for it in person at their local police station, using form EX-16, and pays a fee under **tax model 790, code 012**. Processing at the police end runs roughly **7 to 15 days**.

That timeline matters for the applicant's own filing plan: the letter has to exist before the Schengen visa appointment, because it becomes one of the documents in the file, not something submitted after the fact. If the host in Spain hasn't started this process weeks ahead of the applicant's own appointment, the visa file will be missing a document that a hotel booking would have made unnecessary.

## What the cover letter should do with it

Write the cover letter the way [the general Schengen guide](/schengen-visa-cover-letter-from-india) recommends — purpose, itinerary, means of subsistence, insurance, ties to India — and then add one Spain-specific line: name the host, the relationship, and the fact that a police-issued Carta de Invitación is attached, dated and referenced. That single sentence tells the visa officer the accommodation question has already been answered by Spanish authorities themselves, not just asserted by the applicant.
