Oman lets citizens of more than a hundred countries in without a visa for 14 days. India is on that list — but in the second group, and the second group has a condition attached that decides whether your trip is free or costs money.
The condition: you must already hold a valid visa from the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, or a Schengen country. Hold one, and you walk in visa-free for 14 days. Do not, and you need an Oman e-visa like everyone else.
That single line is the whole planning decision, and it is missing from most guides written for Indian travellers.
Which group you are in#
The Royal Oman Police publishes two lists.
List 1 — unconditional 14-day visa-free entry. 73 countries, mostly Europe plus Japan, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China. India is not on it.
List 2 — 24 countries whose nationals enter visa-free for 14 days if they hold a valid visa from the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, or Schengen. India is on this one, alongside Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Vietnam, Mexico, the Maldives and others.
GCC citizens — Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE — move freely and are a separate case.
If you qualify: what to carry#
The exemption is granted at the border, not pre-approved, so the officer decides on the documents in your hand. Bring:
- The qualifying visa itself, valid, in the passport you are travelling on
- Confirmed hotel reservation for the whole stay
- Health insurance covering Oman
- Return or onward ticket
- Proof of funds for the trip
- Passport valid six months from arrival
Some travellers report being asked whether the qualifying visa has actually been used at least once. Carry the entry stamp or an old boarding pass if you have one — it costs nothing and settles the question.
Fourteen days is the cap and it is not extendable at the border. For a longer trip, take the e-visa instead even if you qualify for the exemption.
If you do not qualify: the e-visa#
Everything runs through the Royal Oman Police e-visa portal. For a holiday, the Tourist Visit Visa (Unsponsored) is the one you want. Options are a short-stay visa, a 30-day single entry, and a one-year multiple-entry visa that permits 30 days per visit.
Applications are typically decided in one to five working days. Requirements are the familiar set: passport with six months' validity, digital photograph, confirmed accommodation, return ticket, and a card to pay with.
There is no visa on arrival for Indian passport holders who fall outside the exemption. Apply before you fly.

Why Oman is worth the paperwork#
It is a four-hour flight from most Indian metros with direct connections, it is dramatically cheaper than the UAE for the same region, and the draw is landscape rather than shopping: the Musandam fjords, the wadis inland from Muscat, the forts, and a coastline that has not been built over.
