Indian passport holders need a visa for Indonesia, including Bali. For a holiday that visa is the e-VOA, and it costs IDR 500,000 — roughly ₹2,600. That part most guides get right. What they leave out is that the visa is only one of three things you must complete, and two of them are separate payments or forms with their own deadlines.
Miss one and you are standing in a queue at Ngurah Rai with a phone that will not load.
The three steps, in order#

Steps 2 and 3 are not visas and do not replace the visa. They are separate systems that happen to be checked at the same counter.
Step 1: the e-VOA#
The electronic visa on arrival gives you 30 days, extendable once for another 30, for tourism. Apply on the official immigration portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you travel and you arrive with an approval already in hand — this is the version worth paying for, because it lets you walk to the e-gate instead of the VOA payment counter.
You can also buy the VOA on arrival at designated airports for the same fee. The queue is the difference.
Requirements are light: passport valid at least six months from arrival, a return or onward ticket, and the fee paid by card. Indonesia does not ask Indians for bank statements or an itinerary for the e-VOA.
What the e-VOA does not allow: work of any kind, including remote work billed to a foreign client if you are asked directly. For anything beyond tourism and short business meetings, you need a different visa class.
Step 2: the arrival card#
The All Indonesia Arrival Card is mandatory, free, and filed online within three days of arrival. It replaced the old paper customs declaration. There is no fee — if a site charges you for it, you are paying a middleman for a government form.
Fill it in from your hotel booking; you need the address of your first night.
Step 3: the Bali tourist levy#
If you are landing in Bali, there is a IDR 150,000 levy per person, separate from everything above. It is per visit, not per night, and children pay too. Pay it online in advance and keep the QR code — spot checks happen at the airport and at some attractions.
If you fly into Jakarta or Surabaya and never enter Bali, this one does not apply to you.

Rupee figures move with the exchange rate; the fees themselves are set in rupiah and have not changed.
Extending your stay#
The 30-day e-VOA extends once, for another 30 days, through the immigration office or the online system. Start the extension about a week before expiry — offices are busy in Bali and the process is not instant.
Overstaying carries a daily fine, charged per day per person, and it is enforced at departure. It is not a warning system; you pay at the airport.
Common mistakes#
- Assuming Bali is visa-free for Indians. It is not, and it never has been. The confusion comes from lists of "visa-free countries for Indians" that include Indonesia because a visa-on-arrival exists — see our dated list of visa-free countries for what actually counts.
- Paying a third party for the arrival card. It is free on the government portal.
- Forgetting the levy for a Bali leg. A Jakarta-then-Bali itinerary still owes it.
- Booking a one-way ticket. Immigration asks for onward travel and airlines check at boarding.
